Gandhi Square Pala

The 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, was celebrated in the year 2019. Gandhiji, the kingpin of the Independence Movement, became an internationally adored personality. Gandhian principles are gaining greater acceptance in several countries, and Gandhiji is revered as a great visionary and moral force across the globe. Although Pala has significance in the Freedom Struggle, there are no befitting memorials here, whereas adjacent towns like Kottayam, Vaikom and Thodupuzha have Gandhiji’s monuments. It was in this context, also as part of Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, that a Gandhi Square and Statue were planned at Pala. The main objective is to transmit the message and contributions of the freedom fighters to the present generation. The Gandhi Square and Statue are installed on the road to the Lawyers’ Chamber owned by the Pala Municipal Council at Moonnani, forking left from the Ettumanoor-Poonjar State Highway. The construction and upkeep of the Gandhi Square and Statue are vested with the Gandhi Square Trust, Pala, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation.

A 4.5-ft tall statue made of iso-resin fibre erected at the centre of the square.

The concept and design present Gandhiji in meditation position. Mr. Cheraas Ravidas, a renowned Ernakulam-based artist, is the sculptor. The Gandhi Square’s engineering executed by Shri. Rajesh Sasinath. The Gandhi Square and Statue are designed in keeping with the tradition of India as well as of Pala.
